With the PlayStation 3, Sony's got the only console that features Blu-ray technology, which proved to be the winner in the battle with HD-DVD a while back.
So the company is looking to take advantage of the high storage capacity of the media and put both a full length high definition film and a PS3 game on the same disc by the time 2010 rings in.
“We are actively pushing, and the way that we see the future is that the movie and the game are placed on the same disc,” explained John Koller, director of hardware marketing for the PS3 in an interview with Video Business.

As PlayStation 3 sales continue to grow, Sony Online Entertainment is looking for the console to account for a larger proportion of their total business.
And by a heftier portion of the pie, SOE President John Smedley is thinking right down the middle.
"I think PS3 will be close to half our business. There's an audience now waiting for online games on the PS3. I believe PSN has over 15 million users today. It's growing so quickly, we see a great user base potential there," he told GameDaily.

Sony recently launched the latest beta for Home on PS3 and the response have been fantastic so far -- for those who have been able to connect.
But the growing pains are certainly to be expected; the official PlayStation blog announced yesterday that everything is back to normal now.
In the next-gen race, Microsoft has had the upper hand on Sony with Live on Xbox 360 being around before PlayStation 3 had even launched.
However, Dan Hill of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, believes that Home is so innovative, it'll help turn the tide in direction of PS3.
Sony Decides To Market PS3 Titles Hard

When PS3 was first released, the big talk from Sony was how it was a computer.
The company was quite proud of the console's horsepower and put the spotlight on the fact that the Cell microprocessor was unlike anything before it. Additionally, Blu-ray was pushed hard as a selling point
But PlayStation 3 sales were disappointing nonetheless, and it's still a neck and neck fight for second place with Microsoft's Xbox 360.
"When we first started - because all the functionality [on the PS3] was radical - we talked about that functionality," explained SCE UK boss Ray Maguire.

Mark Healey, the co-founder of Media Molecule, recently talked up the upcoming PS3 behemoth that is LittleBigPlanet with a refreshing degree of honesty for an exec.
While there's little doubt that LBP will be both groundbreaking and a hit, Healey admitted that there are still some small elements that bother him about the title. Of course, there are beta testers that have also chimed in with their opinions as well.
"The Z [axis] movement is an incredibly hard thing for us to get right. There's times when it annoys me actually, but we can work on that if we want, and refine it," he acknowledged to Eurogamer.

Sure, Microsoft has slashed the price of Xbox 360 in order to try to get an edge against PS3. And yes, Nintendo's DS still outsells Sony's PSP.
But that doesn't mean that Sony isn't having an incredible fiscal year nonetheless.
Head honcho Jack Tretton recently revealed how the company is ahead of the game with PlayStation 3 and PSP.
"We are tracking at 100 percent up over last year," he said in an interview with Reuters. "...About 30 percent ahead of where we should be. So sales could slow down and we will still hit our number."

MM: LittleBigPlanet Will Take Full Advantage Of Blu-ray
Thu, 11 Sep 2008 22:04:14 -0500
by Billy Brown
The release of LittleBigPlanet is right around the corner, and when that glorious day arrives, it will only be available on Blu-ray.
Media Molecule co-founder Alex Evans reaffirmed that fact again in a recent interview. And it appears that the title will be making good use of the format.
"I believe a Blu-ray single layer is 20GB and a dual layer is 40GB, but we're filling up the Blu-ray," he explained.
"One of the things on there is we're having a lot of tutorial content - basically there are two paths through the game, the player's route and the creator's route."
Speaking about how the LBP in its current form would be impossible because of the lack of a hard drive in every unit, Evans gushed about how useful BR has been in the title's development.
"It's really useful that thanks to Blu-ray we haven't needed to worry about file size, it's never crossed my mind," he admitted.

Pop quiz, hotshot. When you think of PS3 do think of Sackboy?
Well...you probably don't yet, considering LittleBigPlanet has been delayed many a time, causing more heartbreak than this writer would care to recollect.
But the title is supposedly coming out this October. And if Sony has their way, Sackboy, the title's star, will be huge.
"We want 'LittleBigPlanet' to lead the charge into a new genre of gaming and turn Sackboy into the next emblematic character for the PS3," said Sony product marketing manager Mark Valledor in an interview with Ad Age.
Greenwald: Time To Buy PS3 Over Xbox 360
Mon, 14 Jul 2008 19:36:44 -0500
by M. Renton
Xbox 360 got the price cut and the new model announcement like everybody expected, but that doesn't mean that the undecided masses should hop aboard the bandwagon quite yet.
According to Signal Hill Capital Group analyst Todd
Greenwald, this is the prime time to buy a PS3. After all, PlayStation 3 has a plethora of exclusive titles in 2008, and it's the most cost efficient Blu-ray player to date. Sony outsold Microsoft in next-gen consoles in June, and big mo' seems to be on their side.
